π‘οΈ Sentinel: [CRITICAL] Fix path traversal in snapshot names#45bitcoiner-dev wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
π¨ Severity: CRITICAL
π‘ Vulnerability: The snapshot `Save` and `Restore` commands accepted a user-provided `name` argument and passed it directly to `snap_dir.join(format!("{name}.json"))`. Because `Path::join` handles relative paths (e.g., `../`) and replaces the entire path if passed an absolute path, an attacker or user could overwrite or read arbitrary files by passing a malicious path as the `name` argument.
π― Impact: Exploiting this allows arbitrary path traversal which could read sensitive local JSON files, overwrite security configurations, or overwrite binary files leading to localized privilege escalation.
π§ Fix: Implemented an explicit allowlist `validate_file_name` in `src/utils.rs` to enforce that snapshot file names strictly consist of alphanumeric characters, dashes, and underscores. Applied this validation before file creation in `src/commands/snapshot.rs`.
β
Verification: Ran `cargo test` successfully and verified that attempting to use `../` or `/absolute/paths` in names now safely errors out.

π Jules, reporting for duty! I'm here to lend a hand with this pull request. When you start a review, I'll add a π emoji to each comment to let you know I've read it. I'll focus on feedback directed at me and will do my best to stay out of conversations between you and other bots or reviewers to keep the noise down. I'll push a commit with your requested changes shortly after. Please note there might be a delay between these steps, but rest assured I'm on the job! For more direct control, you can switch me to Reactive Mode. When this mode is on, I will only act on comments where you specifically mention me with New to Jules? Learn more at jules.google/docs.
